Why grow tomatoes yourself?

At least here, in Estonia, the varieties sold in stores are pretty much the same. But there are so many different kinds for different purposes and with different tastes and textures!

How are you going to cook tomato sauce if you haven’t got the San Marzano? And if you love stuffed tomatoes you will be thrilled to use the special kind that is almost empty inside with thick walls. For example Yellow Stuffer.

The smell of the greenhouse full of tomatoes is one of a kind. I do have a couple of plants in the city on my balcony, too. Luckily they smell as good.

And of course there is a huge difference in taste when you get the fresh tomatoes right then and there from the greenhouse or garden. The varieties grown for sales must be firm so they can be transported and taht’s why so many great tasty varieties are never sold in stores. The store tomatoes often don’t get a chance to ripen naturally. And the tase suffers very much due to these circumstances.

So, if you plan to grow anything next year, let it be tomatoes.

Milleks tomateid ise kasvatada?

Esiteks sellepärast, et erinevate tomatisortide valik meie poelettidel on pehmelt öeldes kesine.

Tomatisorte on olemas igale maitsele ja igaks erinevaks elujuhtumiks.

Näiteks ei ole tegelikult mõtet tavalisest tomatist pastakastet keeta, sest selleks on olemas ideaalne sort San Marzano. See on paksu viljalihaga ja vesist osa on temas minimaalselt.

Kui armastad täidetud tomateid, siis peaksid valima paksu seinaga tomatid, mis on seest peaaegu tühjad, ja loomulikult on aretatud sort, mis just nendele nõudmistele vastab! Näiteks Yellow Stuffer.

Magusa ja hapu tasakaal varieerub sortide lõikes samuti nagu öö ja päev.

Tomat on üks neid vilju, mille maitseomadused on kordi paremad, kui saad nad kätte värskelt oma aiast. Lõhn, mida tunned tomateid täis kasvuhoones, on üks minu lemmikuid. Samas lõhnavad sama hästi ka need paar taime, mis mul linnas rõdul pesitsevad.

Müügiks kasvatatakse sorte, mis taluvad hästi transporti, kuid on seega kõvemad ja tuimema maitsega. Kahjuks pole nad sageli ka loomulikul teel küpseda saanud.

Nii et kui plaanid järgmisel aastal midagi ise kasvatada, siis võiks see olla tomat.
