Money matters: cost per wear – I don’t care! / Raha loeb: moe matemaatika!

Yes, money does matter. If you disagree then let me know how you paid your last rent or how you were able to afford your last meal.

OK, I didn’t mean to be so hard on you…. Let me say this: if you’re in a bad mood right now, this post is not gonna make you happier. Maybe you should just drop it and read it later?

But for the rest of you: Let’s talk about money!

I never like to talk about my personal finances, but I love to give advice to others (as I do have true financial background, if I may say…). Well, my main advice is: do not spend money. On anything. Right….

Today we’ll talk about cost per wear

It’s the sales season and everybody is dying to hit the shops. And we use the most lame excuses to buy ourselves new clothes (I’m no exception!).

One of the excuses is cost per wear.

So you want to buy a new coat for 500 EUR (just an example!) and you figure that you’ll wear it for 3 years, 3 months a year.

So this will be 3 months times 30 days = 90 days.

3 years times 90 days = 270 wears.

500/270=1.85 EUR per wear!

What a small amount!

OK, first of all, if you pay with a credit card, there will probably be the interest to pay on top of the 500 EUR.

Second of all: I’m pretty sure you still have an old coat that you can wear and you do not have to pay anything to wear that coat!

It’s actually worse if you use the cost per wear excuse for buying new jackets or jeans or shoes. How many do you have already? Did you calculate the cost per wear when you bought them? Have you worn them as many times as you thought you would?

If you want to buy a new item of clothing, I suggest you make a written contract with yourself. You will calculate the cost per wear which is literally like the depreciation amount in accounting. And you agree upon the period and how many times you will have to wear it.

Now you will have to wear the new item as many times as you stated in the contract. You will not buy a new similar item before you have fully depreciated this one. And no cheating! (No wearing for 5 minutes at home, no wearing of a winter coat in spring etc.)

I suggest you make an Excel table where you input all your new clothes and calculate cost per wears etc. Fun, isn’t it?

Well, I did warn you that this post will not make you happy. But you’re welcome for the good advice anyway!

Minu peamine nõuanne on: ära kuluta raha. Mitte millelegi. Niisiis…

Tänane teema: kulu kandmiskorra kohta.

Ilmselt olete kursis, et keegi kavalpea on sellise termini välja mõelnud. Iseenesest on see lihtne arvutus.

See on kokku 3 kuud korda 30 päeva = 90 päeva.

3 aastat korda 90 päeva = 270 kandmiskorda.

500/270=1.85 EUR kandmiskorra kohta!

Tundub väike summa.

Siiski, siiski.

Pakun sulle head lahendust.
